Up until the install we heated our DHW via propane. Our propane usage averaged about $90 per month at about $3.15 per gallon. We also dry clothes and cook with propane but clearly the hot water generation is the biggest propane user. With the combination unit's dedicated hot water function the heat pump is now heating our DHW along with the DSH. I am using an 80 gallon direct solar water tank which I bought scratch and dent from a local supply house cheaply. The tank has an electric back-up element but the breaker is turned off. The propane hot water tank is history. I expect our propane bill to drop to 40 per month or less.
Our first electric bill came today. We are pleased. Our electric bill for the month totaled $186.00 in upstate NY for the month. We are pleased as the A/C was running hard early in the month(in the mid 90's and humid during 4th of July week)and this includes full hot water generation for our family of five. This compares to an electric bill of $112.00 for the previous month.
I am looking forward to the upcoming heating season. Our oil burning forced air furnace and associated fuel oil tanks have been removed from the basement.
We set four poles for future PV solar and fully expect we can come very close to being net zero on energy at some point in the future. Panel installation will happen in the coming years.
The Hydron Module combination unit was pricey but we are very pleased with its performance, features, and attractive warranty. At some point we plan to add radiant floor warming on the first floor. The hot water tank I purchased has an extra set of "taps" to allow this using a plate exchanger. My wife does not like cold floors.
